Acne-in-Children

Acne in teenagers is a common phenomenon but there is a growing number of cases of acne in children. Dr. Latanya Benjamin, a dermatologist practicing at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University shared her experience with New York Times on acne in kids. She stated that she often came across cases where children below 10 years of age. According to her statement, she has seen children aged between 7 to 9 who experience complex skin conditions like pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads just like the teenagers.

In a recent research article published in the journal Pediatric Dermatology, researchers expressed their concern over the increasing cases of acne at a tender age.

Reason
Both internal and external reasons are responsible for acne in children. Dr. Lawrence F. Eichenfield, a professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Medicine, University of California, stated that possible reasons for acne during mid-childhood include precocious puberty, congenital adrenal hyperplasia Cushing’s syndrome and several others.

  • Hormonal dysfunction can often lead to a development of acne.
  • Imbalanced diet, consumption of excessive junk food can cause pimples at an early age.
  • Skin infections are often contagious. A school going child can come under the contact of bacteria, fungus and skin infections when playing with other children. A kid might not be able to understand the gruesome results and can touch his own face with his dirty hands. Once this happens the child may also come under the attack of acne and other severe skin ailments.
  • Previous records of hereditary skin problems including acne can be a problem.

Solution

Dealing with acne in children can become tricky. The parents need to handle it with care.

  • If your child is suffering from acne, do not neglect this. Seek professional help. Consult with a pediatrician or a dermatologist immediately.
  • If dealing with acne is frustrating for adults, can you imagine the tremendous mental pressure your child is suffering from? The situation can be worse when the kid is also laughed at by his companions at school or at the playground. They may feel low on energy and motivation. Always motivate your child. Ensure that he/she is never ashamed of it and never lacks self-confidence.
  • Prepare a healthy and tasty diet. Convincing a child to eat healthy food may be challenging at times. As a parent, you need to keep a check on his/her food consumption. Totally stop buying junk food to your kid.
  • Do not stop treatment if you see a speedy recovery. Complete recovery from acne is a matter of time and patience. If a child is showing rapid improvement it is good, but that does not mean the treatment should be stopped the next day. If the problem is not completely solved it may reappear in near future.
  • Some of the preventive measurements are just as common as in the adults. To get rid of pimples, a pre-teen can try avoiding skin contact with dirty hands.
  • Do not allow your child to buy and use any random product from the market that claims to cure acne. Not all anti-acne products are suitable for his/her young skin.
  • A face mask isn’t just for adults. Kids enjoy some rest and relaxation as well. However, you need a best mud mask to reduce the oil in kids skin.

Children normally have the ability to fight health problems faster than the adults. They take less time for recovery when properly guided. If all the conditions are met, you can see your child get rid of pimples within a short period.
